[ddo] this week

Three words...
Diplomacy, diplomacy, diplomacy.... DDO is not Wow. There is no such
idea as "build up aggro and the mob sticks to the tank". The mobs have
the option to switch target whenever they feel that target X is more of
a danger than target Y. They get this check every combat round, not just
every once and a long while like WoW. Tanking in DDO is not just down to
the tank... it's a shared task with the rest of the party. The tank
intimidates and the rest of the party use diplomacy to drop their aggro
(if they can)
We're also not, strategically speaking, focusing on the right things.
Diarm is tanking the main target sometimes (and I may be wrong Diarm, so
please do correct me if I am) to the exclusion of other targets. Really
what we need Diarm to do is tag and hold as many of the Melee targets as
he can (and begin dispatching them as quickly as he can) while Mike and
I mill into the most dangerous targets (i.e. casters etc) on a one by
one basis to drop them as fast as we possibly can to eliminate their
potential threat. In this situation there really shouldn't be many tags
on Conor (aside from the casters possibly hitting him.. which Mike
should sort by tagging them and I'll boomstick them). Leigh's main focus
should be on tagging anything that tags Conor and keeping it busy just
long enough for myself and Mike to switch focus onto it and dispatch it
with him. This is my humble opinion only.. feel free to disagree and
suggest other strategies. The big thing about DDO is we're not as
"pidgeon-holed" by our class as in other games... theoretically, with
the right armour and feats etc, I could be the tank with Diarm being the
big DPS warrior :) - Maybe I should buy myself some +2 full plate and a
big ass tower shield! I could spend the next couple of levels getting
the relevant feats :)
Last night wasn't all that bad really I thought. You have to consider
some "unusual" things about that instance. It's an outdoor environment
so you have very little ability to control the pathing of the mobs and
bunch them up. Example was the glitterdust... it's a great spell for CC
as it paints the invisibles and blinds all mobs... but in that
environment, where the mobs were spreading in all directions, it was
proving a bigger hindrance to us than them (which is why I stopped using
it) because the "target" mob was dragging it out of their group into
ours. In a real "dungeon", I can drop it in front of them and then they
have no choice but to move through it to get to us (and become blind and
visible). Couple that with the number of invisible patrols going around
I think we did alright (not great, but alright) and I have to say,
chaotic or not... I had a good time (except for the time my stupid
f**king scorpion got me killed which irked me tbh. No way should the
summoned monster appear 1/2 way between us and the mobs.. I would always
have it spawn beside the caster)
Another thing we haven't really sorted out is pulling. I don't know
about you guys, but I haven't a clue how is the best way to pull in DDO.
Do we rush the tank in amongst them? Do we tag them with spells from
just inside spell range? Do we tag them with arrows from a long way away
etc etc etc... these are things we should probably work out one evening
for about 15 mins in some baby dungeons.
I think Leigh is right, focus your healing on the tank and let the rest
of us look after ourselves... if we need you, we shout... otherwise it's
our own fault if we get creamed (providing we're all doing our jobs in
combat ok).
Overall, we haven't really sorted out a general combat strategy... and
we probably should. Yes, it's boring to sit talking about mechanics for
15 minutes when you could be exploring a cool dungeon but as the
dungeons get harder we're going to need to gel better and better as a
unit in all ways (spell strategies, sneaking, trap avoiding and combat)
to get to the really meaty stuff. At the moment I think we're still
finding our feet. Keep in mind, we really haven't played this game
much... about, what? 20 maybe 25 hours? We've still a lot to learn (all
of us) and we all have to allow that one or other of us will Leroy us
every once and a while. The thing to learn to do is not to let it get to
us too much... Hey.. that's part of the fun isn't it? :)
I couldn't care an arse about XP or gold or whatever... I enjoy the
challenge of the quests and the company of friends... the XP and gold is
a bonus. I'm sorry you lost out last Conor, but it's going to happen to
each of us at some stage where we end up worse off at the end of the
night than we started. (I know there have been some nights I've had
practically 0 net gain). You just have to be philosophical about it and
laugh it off... now if it goes that way every night, then that's a
different story :)
