The "blindness" is just a screen effect for members of our party. You 
can still target other players (F1 to F6) or "mobs" (mob= mobile object, 
basically an enemy in MMO speak). This is conclusively so because I was 
doing it myself last night when inside glitterdust.

I stopped using it because it's basically, as your quote said, a area 
denial spell... which doesn't really work in outdoors... unless, of 
course, the cool thing would be to drop it on your head and you "fly by 
instruments" for the fight secure in the knowledge that no mob is going 
to be able to beat on you >:)
