| Report | Although saturday
morning was as wet as they come, sunday turned out glorious sunlight,
and this mixed with the lung bursting gusty wind had dried the pitch
out lovely. All 13 Spartak had found Oakington, north of the A14, and
all 13 even found the pitch eventually. Spartak
started the game lethargically as though they had all got a nose bleed
coming this far north. They then continued lethargically always
second to the ball. To be fair Oakington were a good passing side,
and given the time allowed on the ball put together some good moves,
especially with some of their strong players down the right. One of these moves resulted in a cross into the Spartak
area, a mix up and the first Oakington goal. This prompted the away
team into a little life, but they were still not at the races.
Oakington had much of the ball, with the only notable activity a few
mazey runs from Steve, some good tackling in midfield from Pete, a
late tackle from Dave up front who managed not to answer back to the
ref, and a prospective shot from Graeme going just wide with the
keeper out his goals. Eventually though with the wind behind them and
the majority of posession Oakington went into the break with a 2-0
lead. Spartak came out fighting, not literallly, as it
seemed a very fair game vs good oposition. They started to see a
little more of the ball, with Steve getting more possession, and Bren
moved up front. Calamity struck after a dodgy goal kick into the wind
that failed to get any distance, and Oakington made the most of it to
take a 3-0 lead. Sam substituted for Graeme after a knock on the
shin/ankle, and finished a great move down the right to find the net.
This led to Spartak getting a bit more possession and chances,
especially down the right with Sam and Steve linking well, resulting
in a few crosses passing across the six yard box, with one especially
zipping across in front of Dave Fricker a la Gazza '96, just unable to
connect. With Spartak pushing on in search of more
goals it was always likely that holes appeared at the back, and it was
only several excellent saves, including one superb double from the
keeper that had kept Spartak in the game throughout. Eventually though the home team got another to make it
4-1. Doc came on for John late on to set one up for Bren to just
strike over. Overall the result was a fair one on
Spartaks poor display, or perhaps they just lost to a better team on
the day. |
