| With Spartak losing their only available Keeper and a first choice Centre back through injury/illness on Saturday, team selction proved interesting on Sunday morning. Striker Chris was put in nets, Steve slotted into the vacant central defensive role and Pete came into his place in central midfield. With no balls and no keeper gloves was the day going to get any more disasterous.
Fortunately not and after borrowing a ball from the game next door Spartak startd really brightly completely bossing all areas of the park. Chances were being created down both flanks through Doc and John and via route one using the strong wind. The first goal should have been scored by Clive who bundled the ball over the line by a clear yard and when the defender cleared it was with disbelief that the goal wasn't given. Fortunately the first actual goal came from the boot of Pete when he picked the ball up 30 yards out had a touch and let fly with a bullet of a shot which cannoned in off the underside of the crossbar.
At the other end Steve, Andrew, Owen and Matt were doing a great job of restricting genetics to long range efforts. One effort however did leave Chris in nets to pull off a brilliant diving save to his left to push it wide.
Spartaks second came in similar fashion with Pete picking up the ball way out and this time taking on a defender or two and shooting across the keeper into the side netting, another belter! The last action of the half saw Clive denied again but this time by a spectacular save from the genetics keeper.
It was kept the same at half time and Spartak were second best for the first 10 minutes of the second half but they soon got in their stride again when Clive went down the left and put in a cross only for Dave to end up on his arse and the ball out for a throw. Paul came on for Doc and Dave went in nets after getting a small knock on the shin. This allowed fresh legged Chris to partner Clive and start administering some mayhem. Chances were few and far between with a number being squandered. The best came when Chris met a cross from the right with a bullet shot only to see the keeper get in the way to make another brilliant save. This win was well earned especially considering the circumstances leading up to the game. 3 more league games to go to boost confidence and fitness for May 9th. |
