09/05/2004 CDFL Challenge Cup
Spartak lift the cup!

Most Spartak players will vividly remember the FA Cup Finals of the 1980s. The games seemed so memorable back then; Coventry beating Spurs, Beasant diving to save from Aldridge, Whiteside curling an extra time beauty for Manchester United. Some of the old guard might even recall the moment of brilliance from Villa (Ricky that is).

Spartak enjoy low pressure victory

A beautiful summers morning and Spartak had few cares in the world for their last league fixture of the year and their last game at Fortress Bayer. The sun was shining, the birds were singing and the grass was longer than a student's debt record.

Spartak unlucky in gloom

After a sun scorched weekend, everybody at Spartak was looking forward to a lovely sunny evening's football. Which was why the mood wasn't exactly high after a day of rain and a gloomy dark sky which seemed lower than a politician morals.

Spartak pay for missed chances

Initially there was major confusion at this fixture as nobody could figure out why they weren't freezing and battling a hurricane when playing on Coldhams Common. On the contrary, it was glorious sunshine which bathed the Spartak lads as the trudged towards the pitches. Choosing a pitch proved to be most difficult as most seemed to have been microwaved to a crisp and then attacked by a herd of stampeding elephants, but luckily a dim distant corner was found which had a minimum of craters.

Gritty team performance deserved the win

With Spartak losing their only available Keeper and a first choice Centre back through injury/illness on Saturday, team selction proved interesting on Sunday morning. Striker Chris was put in nets, Steve slotted into the vacant central defensive role and Pete came into his place in central midfield. With no balls and no keeper gloves was the day going to get any more disasterous.

28/03/2003 Second Division Cup
Spartak self destruct

Words cannot describe how bad this all was. What a difference a week or two can make. In their previous meeting, the CDFL Cup semi-final, a hard fought match was controlled and ultimately won by Spartak, battling for their lives and playing some great football. Here the only battle they managed was to get out of bed at the required time with the changing of the clocks.

Spartak reach final in gritty cup tie

In the first of 3 meetings between these 2 teams in coming weeks it gave Spartak a chance to try out some tactics. However conditions weren't favouring a flowing game of football with a strong wind howling across the pitch and intermitant rain causing problems.

Spartak just lose out in up hill battle

Eventually the pitch was located on this dreary Sunday morning only to discover we were sharing it with the local mole population and Cambridgeshire mountaineering club. Spartak did have 15 to choose from and when the game eventually got under way (once Akela had turned up so the opposition could get changed) Spartak started with what on paper was a strong side.

Cup game frozen out

In the history of great battles, harsh conditions have often dictated the outcome. From Bastogne to Stalingrad, freezing arctic weather has often been the major factor to consider. Thus it was on this freezing Sunday morning when our great leaders, having learned from the folly of Napoleon and Hitler, refused to meet on the snow covered fields of Cambridgeshire.

Sad Spartak fail to perform at Stud

Spartak were under stregth for the cross division game away at Darley: without the spine of the team with Dave "I got five" Fricker away and Bowman and Withers training in London (not for football). The remainder managed to eventually all find the pitch, all had kit, and one ball between them, planning to play with the Studs.

Spartak breeze through clash with top side

On an unbelievably windy morning in Cambridge Spartak gave a demonstration of football that arguably has not been matched this year.

Spartak slide out of Centenary Cup

Although saturday morning was as wet as they come, sunday turned out glorious sunlight, and this mixed with the lung bursting gusty wind had dried the pitch out lovely. All 13 Spartak had found Oakington, north of the A14, and all 13 even found the pitch eventually.

Spartak battle out deserved victory

On a glorious Sunday morning Spartak had 16 to choose from and started with a rare organised warm up. Spartak won the toss and switched ends to avoid the glare of the sun.

Spartak cruise in one sided affair

With a large and strong squad for the second week running Spartak were away in the league for only the second time this season to bottom of the table Quayside Albion. It was a game Spartak should win but Albion would want revenge for the 8-4 defeat on the opening day of the season.

Dismal start to the year for Spartak

The first, and perhaps only, excitment of the day came when Spartak in the first game of 2004 managed to get a squad of 15 together.

21/12/2003 CDFL Challenge Cup
Spartak beat the odds to march into semis

In this the last game before the Christmas break Spartak had their work cut out against a Chesterton team which a few weeks previous had turned them over 5-0. With conditions less than favourable and a number of regulars unavailable Spartak did manage to put together a strong line up but with Chestertons 15 man squad, physio and coach, things looked ominous.

After a successful team building night on Wednesday Spartak arived in good spirits keen to make ammends for the previous weeks performance.

Historic roll goes down in flames

There are some things which are best not talked about. Shocking defending, shocking tackling, shocking marking, shocking commitment, shocking shooting, shocking finishing and a penalty that would embarrass Garreth Southgate just about sums it all up.

Spartak officially on a roll

Arriving on the back of an historic hatrick of victories, Spartak were keen to extend this run. However this plan seemed doomed when Spartak could only get 10 players by 10:30 and the emergency services were called, aka Doc, to get an 11th player as soon as possible. This meant the game had to start with Spartak only fielding 10.

Spartak triumph in difficult conditions

With the rain still pouring down Spartak arrived with a new keeper and a very defensive looking 12 man squad.

Deserved win finally arrives for Spartak

With hangovers a plenty and numbers reduced due to the inconsiderate cross fixturing with a small rugby game, Spartak managed to get 11 players and a ref.

Spartak survive epic cup battle

117 minutes of pure football heaven

Spartak came to this game expecting a fairly comfortable passage to the next round of the 2nd Division Cup. But Genetics improve every time we play them, and turned up with some decent new players and a fresh sense of belief.

Spartak kicked to pieces in bruising defeat

Spartak arrived on Sunday with the unusual feeling of confidence. This was boosted by the unexpected availability of Sam and Chris, both of which had cracking games the week before. Team selection had few surprises the only changes of note was Bowman on the right of defence due to the availability of 3 centre backs and Ronnie in the middle of the park replacing the unavailable Bren.

Confident Spartak Cruise in Cup

Spartak went into this game looking to build on their good performance last week. Not knowing what to expect from a side they have never played before, they hoped to get the result as well.

Spartak again had a full squad of 14 to select from and with Doc opting out of this one it was left for Dave to bear the brunt of team selection.

Spartak throw away valuable points

If they are not careful Spartak's season will turn into an episode of Roadrunner with them cast as the Coyote who almost gets the prize but in the end blows up and staggers off in disbelieving despair.

Never have Spartak had so many players available for selection, and with kit available for all; the local DIY stores and garden centres must be suffering from all the lost business.

Black day for Spartak

For Spartak christmas came early yesterday, but not in exactly they way they hoped. Instead of getting nice presents they took part in a sad pantomime. He's behind you! they were screaming. Who? Nobody else in the bloody league if they keep playing like that because they will be bottom!

Good start leaves Spartak Top

In a dramatic shakeup of the established order of things, Spartak managed to actually win their first game of the season and now sit happily at the top of the division. But can they build on this start and continue with winning ways or is it just a house of cards and are they due a kick in the deck?

New Season beckons for enthusiastic Spartak

Another year, another season of triumph and heartbreak! The Spartak boys are back in their boots and raring to go. To the pub, after the match, unfortunately.
