We get up and film kids. Much excitement!! LOADS of toys. Santa went a bit nuts. He knew where to put stuff as Fionn put new clothes for Kate on the couch and new clothes for Daire on chair. Kate got black baby born, pink leap pad book, russian dolls, little figures. Daire got cowboy guns and hat, jump ahead computer edu-game. Books too. Dr Seuss Fox in Socks + The cat in the Hat + Green Eggs and Ham + .. Furry Nutcracker book for Kate.
It's wet and not too cold out. No way I think is there going to be snow.
Christmas dinner. I'm not too hungry :( I chop sprouts and put on potatoes and stuff. Dish up. I have a small amount. All limbs sore. Fionn gets kids their new pyjamas and we bring them to bed. It's a bit late ... after a while Daire still awake worried can't sleep but we reassure him. We get stuff down from the attic "bags for the trip to Cobh & Limerick". Lots of bumping and rustling. Leave carrot and mince pie and glass of ? for Santa and reindeer.
My stomach is cramped. I don't sleep until Fionn gives me rennie at 4.
Bag heavy. Cycle via sandyford. Down footpath in Wedgewood. Back gate open. good. Park bike. Meet Fionn. Sit beside Sarah? Conor Boyle's Mom. The Wonderful Wizzard of Oz. Daire is a munchkin. I take photos. Fionn takes photos. Daire has lines at the start :) David is the gatekeeper of the city of Oz. Excellent as leather coated "go away" threatening guy.

all your base is belong to us that has come up a bit lately
Less busy in work. Friday release of smsengine does all needed. So reading cpan2rpm, reading perl lib/cpan stuff.
I leg it to get lunch 15:00 and catch Daire's concert too. It's COLD and school is locked when we arrive. Threatening to rain. A lady - Aisling's mum ?sp?jeez?Ailis with 3yrold trying to get in too. She has a 19yr old too. Get in fire exit and wait where concert is being practiced. Fionn comes with Kate. Kate is beaming happy to see us. Recorders and violins in concert. Daire has been practising hot cross buns lots.
lots of cpan and rpming
home before 6! yay. Kids having mince & bean stuff with pasta. I chomp some food. Salmon steaks grilled with sugar snap pea and mushroom and nut salad. Then shower. As I shower Kate comes in and lays down towels and mops up water leaking onto floor. Fionn is wrapping presents and stuff. I head to get babysitter Ruth. Bring kate in her warm pyjama jump suit and a blanket. When we get back Kate upstairs and I speed read her the gingerbread man. We take too long downstairs going ... put presents into boot. Kate crys lots. Fionn and then I up and then lets GO!
Drop presents in Eoin & Mary's house in Stillorgan first. Mary's sister is there. Then on to Mary's soiree. Yummy yummy mulled wine and lots of tasty bits. Chat to people.
Home 12:15. Fionn gives Ruth a lift home. I grab food to eat - salmon sandwich. Fionn home, makes tea. I'm considering sushi or hummus. Hummus wins. I had put chick peas to soak earlier. Fionn says "breadmaker" and points me at sun dried tomato bread recipie. Fionn sets up the breadmaker machine timer. So I collect stuff and put the bread mix together. It's after 1 by time I'm going to bed. I also find clothes to hang out in washing machine.
I head shopping. Kate likes the idea ... so, Hmmm. Thinking of just telling Daire to tell Fionn Kate gone with Daddy! eek :) Kate promises to be really good. We talk to Fionn. Say bye bye. I stow emergency fruit & chocolate in coat. We head away in car. OOP! White's cross has changed. I turn right unintentionally. We go to Deansgrange. Left turn traffic is backed up. Get to Blackrock. Frascati park lane backed up so we go across road. Easy to get parking. We get the buggy and bags out. First thing get nice smelly stuff for Fionn. Look in bookshop. Kate wriggling buggy. Next nuts and apricots and herbal teas. Look in bewlies. Then across road. Get milk frother. Tall measuring jugs for our kitchen. No suitable knife blocks. Kate likes plastic jug and sitting moving buggy in shop. Back across road. Get cafeteria in bewlies. And freshly ground coffee. Put stuff in car and get a trolley. Then grab bread & ham and milk in Superquinn ..... and some fruit (pineapple!, bananas, apples, oranges, pears, plums) and some veg (brocolli and potatoes and tomatoes), eggs, yoghurt, wine, tuna and salmon (thinking maybe sushi for doolin food), and looroll. Kate eats lots of a baguette in shop. Put stuff in car. Kate & I take a break for a picnic of fruit (bananas) and some chocolate). Get buggy out again. We trundle to blackrock market. Look at pretty stuff. Dream catcher and ogre face for Mum for garden maybe near pond. Spend long time looking at jewelry for Fionn. Shop where you pick out each bead for bracelet or necklace. Kate loves all the beads. Make plan for our bracelet. We hold her and count beads into boxes. Long time spent picking out stuff. Get kit. Then we find two piano stools! One looks older a little nicer perhaps but broken, very rickety. Another quite sturdy. Recover cushion would be lovely I think. We buy it for 50 euros. Head away pushing buggy and stool under arm. Back along road - we see pears spilled. Back to car. home! Kate has been very good! And we have taken it easy enough.
I cook out of date eggses (nuke em) and black pudding left over in fridge. Eat with turnips and potatoes. Fionn cooked burgers and beans for themselves earlier. Kate likes beans and burger. Daire playing computer all day with Conor. Fionn cooks nice sane omlette for herself and Daire and Kate ... & I help finish it :)
Bedtime for kids. I show Fionn purchases. Sneak hers behind tree. When she is in bed reading I make sounds like turning off computer and putting clothes away while really sneaking the piano stool into cupboard in our room! heh heh heh >;) Read. (Brian Aldiss - Titan) Bed. Wow! bed not too late AGAIN!
Daire & Fionn come home. We have cappuchinos, Kate has hot choc, Conor visits Daire. Daire has hot choc a bit after. We have lunch various snacks. Fionn heads off to Liffey valley shopping. Conor and Daire play with tank and cars and wrecking ball and books falling off set of drawers. Loads on computer later. Kate & I a bit stir crazy but not too much.
Fionn home. Fionn cooks potatoes and turnips and pizza. I finish up cooking dinner mash potatoes and turnips and dish up food & drinks. After food relax. Kids to bed. Stories.
I'm dying to have at computer and try fix sound properly. I resist. Fionn's got presents for my family too. Yay. Fionn sorts and I wrap and Fionn labels. Bed early! Before 12.

All day in work I'm packing up smsengine release. Making docs nice. Service script, release notes, perl libs. Split out FileQueue copy hack hack perl libs Malefile.PL, MANIFEST, ... cpan reading. work work work test test test All working bakunin. Happy. test install on chomsky goes slow. adding perl libs. install of POE and all dependancies takes a while. release made 20:00 ish. Stella in doing releases too. javascript select box thing. Home after 21:00. Fionn cross. I feed myself. Talk. Better. BEd.
Home. Food. Hello kids. Hello Fionn!
Drive to Tallaght after writing lists for a while. ARGH! In toward square but get completely lost. Fail to find Smyths. After while find it and it WAS right where I drove in only now behind under-construction-covered-in-plastic car park. right. Scoot around. Scoot more. Scoot calmly. Store very big. Lots of toys. Find each slowly. buy buy buy! Back into car. Drive around and find "the square" urgh. In we go. 20:30. Stuff shutting Up. Scoot around and don't find much. Grand like, but. Buy bread & milk for kids school lunches and breakfast.
Drive. Towards town. Haven't clue where I am. Take a likely leftish then right. End up coming in Wexford St. Awkward swosh left off Geroge's St. across by Drury St, left onto Stephen's Green, eek! going different way. right. Down towards Pearse St. Left right by Mulligans. Parking space. Whee! Phone home. Into pub. Mmm. coke. phew! Very crowded and very pushy people make space oohhh. Talk talk. More coke. Out we go and home. Gah :( wrong gun :( Pink other think. But alright. Do stuff. Intend going to bed but get sucked in. BED!
Leop roundabout is blocking-backing up traffic. Lots of gardai around watching traffic this morning (and these weeks). Drop kids by Luas stop. Gate locked but David goes very slow wants to try it. Ohhhh. Anyway. Very slow. Once nearly round bushes I go. Kate realises she has no shoes. Happy though. We say "oohhh no. no shoes for Kate. No coat either!". Get her dressed in car. In we go. Bye bye. She's quite pleased. I get bike. Unlock. Raise saddle. Cycle cycle. Have to stop at roundabout. But traffic gap right then so go easy courier on my right.

got same modem to work this week - Suse - driver from Intel ( post #2) Hullo, Your modem and problem sound exactly like mine. I got the very same driver and had make problems BUT ... I can fix them. yay me! Got modem working ... but had to do a couple of things first. I did see around stuff on web about ?slmodem? ohhh something else? Hmm. I can't remember name now. Or another non intel driver that might work ... An open source one more generic so would be preferable. But I saw it after I got the intel one working. As this one works for me I'm not going to check it out (for now). The makefile is silly. If the files do not exist ... the diff result is blank. Yep. Makefile thinks the diff has matches succesfully and carries on. diff: /boot/vmlinuz.autoconf.h: No such file or directory autoconf.h matches running kernel diff: /boot/vmlinuz.version.h: No such file or directory version.h matches running kernel Those files were not there for me either. To fix this I went looking for them. locate autoconf.h locate version.h |grep linux You will find a good few version.h files but you want the one that applies to your kernel. e.g. (different machine than at home - redhat 9.1) your kernel versions will probably be different /usr/include/linux/autoconf.h /usr/src/linux-2.4.20-8/include/linux/autoconf.h /usr/src/linux-2.6.3/include/linux/autoconf.h /usr/src/linux-2.4.20-8/arch/i386/math-emu/version.h /usr/src/linux-2.4.20-8/drivers/addon/aep/driver_version.h /usr/src/linux-2.4.20-8/drivers/addon/cipe/version.h /usr/src/linux-2.4.20-8/drivers/addon/iscsi/iscsi-version.h /usr/src/linux-2.4.20-8/drivers/addon/iscsi/version.h /usr/src/linux-2.4.20-8/drivers/addon/qla2200/qla_version.h /usr/src/linux-2.4.20-8/drivers/net/sk98lin/h/skversion.h /usr/src/linux-2.4.20-8/include/linux/version.h /usr/src/linux-2.4.20-8/include/pcmcia/version.h /usr/src/linux-2.6.3/include/linux/version.h which one? The one for your kernel: maybe /usr/include/linux/autoconf.h (take a look inside) better maybe to go for one exactly matching kernel /usr/src/linux-2.4.20-8/include/linux/autoconf.h /usr/src/linux-2.4.20-8/include/linux/version.h As root copy them to where makefile wants them: cp /usr/src/linux-2.4.20-8/include/linux/autoconf.h /boot/vmlinuz.autoconf.h cp /usr/src/linux-2.4.20-8/include/linux/version.h /boot/vmlinuz.version.h _now_ try the make again. and make install. I had lots of warnings in the make - don't like seeing warnings. They are our friends BUT they are our friends as developers and we should make sure to explicitly allow them or remove them. But build was good. Now the modem was working. Test using dial up, test using minicom, however you want. BUT ... next time I restarted the computer the modem service failed to start. It was not installed as a service on any runlevel. Or at least ... I saw it but not sure exactly. Was trying to start before any other service? Can start the service manually after every restart like this: /etc/init.d/537_boot start (as root) but that would be a pain So .... need to do more fixing. As root edit script /etc/init.d/537_boot which was installed as the service start script for the soft modem. (NOTE: maybe your installer did work? check out does modem still work after reboot? script name could maybe be different) I changes all calls to lsmod, depmod, rmmod .... to use full path i.e. /sbin/lsmod /sbin/depmod etc That's just because I'm fussy. Add in following lines near top of script: # chkconfig: 2345 # description: hugely bloated but working intel 537 softmodem driver # processname: 537_boot Then install script to start at these runlevels (2,3,4 and 5) (runlevel 3 would do but ... not worried about others) as root: /sbin/chkconfig --add 537_boot /sbin/chkconfig --list 537_boot Okay. Hope it works for you. I'll check back maybe see if it all went horribly wrong :-7 A couple of comments: Errors in make and service scripts are a little tricky but pretty basic. Should always put full path in root commands called from service scripts otherwise scripts fail for non root and sudo users. e.g. /sbin/lsmod and /sbin/depmod ... instead of just lsmod and depmod ... The module being loaded into the kernel is ... 6 MEGABYTES!! AIE! But it seems grand and works beautifully, seems stable. Now, hmmm, that I've written all this up where could we log bugs/fixes with intel?http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Umami http://wiki.linuxquestions.org/wiki/Hardware http://developer.intel.com/design/modems/support/drivers.htm ftp://aiedownload.intel.com/df-support/6806/ENG/readme.txt http://developer.intel.com/design/modems/products/537ep.htm
vbm.linux@intel.com 587ep modem driver install report (with suse 9.1) Hello there, I got a new pc very recently (dell dimension 4600 base) and installed Suse 9.1. Modem didn't install automagically. Through grepping web I found your driver. ftp://aiedownload.intel.com/df-support/6806/ENG/readme.txt http://downloadfinder.intel.com/scripts-df/filter_results.asp?strOSs=81&strTypes=DRV&ProductID=1230&OSFullName=SuSE*+Linux&submit=Go%21 Thank you for that. I got the modem working BUT had to do a couple of awkward things. You might like to know of them as if you're making changes they may make other users experience more smooth? I also posted this info to someone on http://www.linuxquestions.org with exactly the same issues as I had but without the knowledge to overcome them. 1. makefile and version.h/autoconf.h get this on "make": diff: /boot/vmlinuz.autoconf.h: No such file or directory autoconf.h matches running kernel diff: /boot/vmlinuz.version.h: No such file or directory version.h matches running kernel If the files do not exist ... the diff result is blank. Yep. Makefile thinks the diff has matched succesfully and carries on. To fix this I went looking for them. cp /usr/src/linux-2.4.20-8/include/linux/autoconf.h /boot/vmlinuz.autoconf.h cp /usr/src/linux-2.4.20-8/include/linux/version.h /boot/vmlinuz.version.h 2. service script 537_boot After make install the modem was working. BUT ... next time I restarted the computer the modem service failed to start. It was not installed as a service on any runlevel. Or at least ... I saw it but not sure exactly. Was trying to start before any other service? So .... 2.1 full path to root utilities I changed all calls to lsmod, depmod, rmmod .... to use full path i.e. /sbin/lsmod /sbin/depmod etc In service scripts I think this is general practice. Non root users won't have privs to insmod or depmod anyway. Does allow non root users to query modem status. Allows sudo users to start/stop scripts too. 2.2 install service for runlevels something was installed - not exactly sure what as it seemed to start before any other service. A bit weird. I added in following lines near top of script: # chkconfig: 2345 # description: huge but working intel 537ep softmodem driver # processname: 537_boot Then install script to start at these runlevels (2,3,4 and 5) (runlevel 3 would do but ... not worried about others) as root: /sbin/chkconfig --add 537_boot /sbin/chkconfig --list 537_boot Okay. That's it. The module being loaded into the kernel is ... 6 MEGABYTES!! My graphics module is just 2MEG. I'm going to take a look at that sometime with all my copious amounts of free time. It has worked for me and doesn't seem to cause problems. James.
I go down first. Kate putting on her shoes by herself. One weetabix for Daire - and another after a bit. Kate cross over porridge in bowl. Cross rotating and wailing on kitchen floor so I can't understand her. Porridge into my bowl. So we get her to tell us. Milk in first. Raisins we add after.
Make kids lunches. It's late. 5 to 9. I start eating my breakfast. Daire heads down for David & Joey. Kate has some of my food. Plays singing snowman. Boys come after a bit. Joey first. With crackers. drive drive drive school drive Kate creche see Orla and Joanne. cycle cycle work. Ger's in. Waider comes. Coffee. Diary.
And here we are. Must put some of Bill's music up.
Someone on xchat has set topic to Winston's travel journal - Mexico Winston's web page winstonralph.com doesn't work?
No emails still from ESAT/BT broadband. Or from scan.co.uk. I go home lunchtime. Get query number for scan. Find esat/bt account name 37greeneagles in book (spend ages looking for it on BOTH computers - I did it at 4am some morning - didn't record it electronically?) Noodles slurp. Back to work.
One bounce/failure to xiam people. Reading loads on CPAN and packing up bundles of perl libs.
Fionn calls 17:30ish I head home 18:00. Kids not appreciating chicken casserole at home. Daire has eeuw face on. Kate cross. Wants clean chicken. Get clean plate for Kate. Pick out chicken, carrot and potato. Daire eats chicken. Fionn up for rest. Then Daire gets out frozen fruit and two muller rices. I microwave them. Daire eats his strawberry one. Kate eats half. I get other half. They put on little robot on computer. Quick kitchen tidy. Fionn doesn't tidy as she cooks. There isn't a bit of free counter space to put stuff down on!
I watch little robots with kids too. Then do violin with Daire. Hot cross buns. For school concert. Plays with cd and without. Rythm is tricky to get. Kate shouts at us for attention - she's doing TuxPaint. Likes butterflies. Fionn comes down.
Time for bed for kids. Daire up. Kate up but cross. Stories for Kate in our bed. Read Wind in the Willows Toad does a deal with gypsy horse for money and stew. Kate comes into her bed while read that story. Asleep by time 6 pages are over.
Fionn heads off to Dunnes to do shopping. I finish kitchen tidy, Computer. LOADS of poking at drivers, cute that suse uses service script to do the insmods and lsmods of the kernel modules as a service. Configure loads of stuff. Nothing working. Then .... PLUG THE SPEAKERS INTO DIFFERENT SOUND OUT!!!!!! Ahem. Right. Lovely.
When Fionn comes back I show her cute TuxRacer. Play Bill's music. Fionn collects ironing for Tracy. Take dryish clothes down clothes horse. Hang up clothes from washing machine. I enjoy computer making noise a little bit more. Then up bed. Candle lighting. Read Stephen Baxter Titan (just started after finishing David Brin's uplift crew of fens and men hiding on water - metallic planet).
It's not until 4 that we leave house to go to Naomh Olaf's GAA club. A few trees left scattered round. Kate falls fast asleep in car on trip down. Hold up various trees. I quite like maybe five. Very good growth. Nice trees. One different one - variety. 30 euros but goes to GAA club. Hopefully not too much towards guinness and more towards hurlies. Persuade Fionn and Daire - Fionn is thinking the ones left are the rejects. Hmm. No ties in car. Fold down seat, they put tree gently in and we drive away boot wide open. Drop Daire & Fionn in Atlantic homecare. I take tree and sleepy Kate home. Put stand on tree, tree inside. Grab shopping bags. Kate still asleep. Check for plumber's tape. Nope. None. I was wrong. Must be me thinking about tape in Cobh. Go get petrol on way back. Park. Find Daire, tell him I'm here. Back to Kate. Park much closer to entrance when some cars go away. Then in again. They're at checkout. Tell Fionn plumber's tape. Then I pay for stuff and carry it to car with Daire.
Home. Kate wakes. Kate loo! In we go. OHHH a tree! Kate loo! Back down much excitement. Straighten tree, metal stand bending a bit I think. Carry armchair up to our room. Tree in place, straight. Lights on and kids and Fionn get lots more stuff on it. Fionn cooks omlette, potatoes, egg & rice for kids before. Assumpta calls in. Brings Kate to see their tree. I hang outdoor lights on thorny bush. THIS year I use thick gloves & coat. Much less ow. Looks very lines of lights first, up & down them and attach to branches. Pretty.
I turn off water in attic by tying up stop-cock. flush various loos trying to make sure water is off at right source.
Family back from next door. With popcorn. Up to bed we go, pyjamas, bathroom, stories for Kate.
Tools out ready to try fix leaky pipe in loo. (Fionn has been mopping up and diagnosing problem for last week.) Fionn is right about water mains being under sink. Take stuff out of the way and turn that off. Drain water out sink and loos. Half watching TV with Fionn at same time.
Kate is out of bed wanting to go to loo. She can't as the top of the cistern is on the toilet seat! I help her. Back to bed. Ours or hers I forget. These days she is shifting herself into her bed or going to sleep in it. But throwing duvet away.
Take stopcock off and pipe apart. The leak is on interface between plastic & copper. A wad of plumbers tape brown comes out. I wrap all back up - light amount of tape - awkward as plastic fittings will only be gripped by our big green bitey pliers yoke. First try turn water back on attic and mains. But it leaks faster!! Turn water off again. Little bit of TV with Fionn while water drains. Then put LOADS of tape around plastic thing. Then oops. Have to twist plastic nutty yoke on so twist more tape round when it is attached on loo. Put all back together. Water on. Seems better. No leaks I can see. Does a loud resonant harmonic plumbing tone. Turn on other water and mess with pipe and tone stops ... by itself? OR air gone from pipe? Mop up. Put stuff back tidy in bathrooms. Tidy kitchen. Tidy tools.
Kids playing loads of computer. Daire discovered by himself rebooting and grub choosing between windows and linux. Discovering games on linux (suse 9.1) I hadn't seen yet. Kate likes Jump Ahead toddlers, also both like TuxPaint.
We go to Kilcoole - to Glenroe open farm. Fly past exit ... go good way past. Oh. Turn round & find it. Crib with sheep, cow and donkey in stable. I like animals. Go back to car to fetch camera. Lose others for a bit. Then animal meeting. Gerbils, rabbits, mouse. Goats. Horses. Reindeer. Some of them fancy coat. Geese. Pig is asleep. Then playground. Kate gets on swing horse thing. And stays there for ages. It gets dark and via wash hands we go wait for santa claus in front of video. Shortly we meet him, Kate is shy but chats after a bit. Daire is very good. Get presents. Then Daire & Fionn in shop. Home we go - Delgany? oops via Bray.
I put on Duck. Carrots underneath. Roasting. Rice on to boil. Bill calls. Onion + pine nuts + seeds on top of duck. Mix it a few times. Feed kids rice first. Kate eats solidly for 20 mins before we all sit down. Eats with us. Daire likes duck. Has lots. Kate likes duck. Has less than Daire but chew her bones & Bill's bones. Yum. After tea kids up to bed. I read Kate stories, settle her. Daire story? Last half of chapter where Ratty has met the seafaring rat and when Mole rescues him from the spell.
TV. Dunno what is on. Bill heads after a bit. Later I get modem working. ?Silicon Integrated?Broadcom?dunno Intel 537EP AC'97 Modem Controller (56k Winmodem) Not impressed with intel's makefile. Does a diff and blank match so thought it was successful but /boot/vmlinuz.autoconf.h didn't exist nor did /boot/vmlinuz.version.h I found likely candidates and put them in. Then build has warnings. I don't like warnings. They are your friends! Then install does okay. But only as root with environment (su - like). depmod and insmod not found otherwise. /dev/modem created. Yes. Yay. Minicom AT get's answered. YAY. BUT for all that modem works grand, suse nice intuitive modem icon, can look at logfiles right-click
Dialing up checking various stuff and message to scan about return of display and get another. Run yast2 video - or actually you. Wow! Full online package updater. Find nVidia. Download all 6MEG of it. Accept licence. heh. Watch tv with fionn while that gets there. YOU/yast install that and reboot? very windowsy. Could probably stop and restart services and modules but reboot would actually be easier. THEN ... I test 3D games ... until 4am!!!! TuxRacer is LOVELY ohh I love it. (Pingus I loved yesterday - still do - showed Daire & Conor - they're playing old old pc lemmings too at the moment). Racer and another 3D thing seem really intended for network play. Flight sim fun. TO.. something car racer again, VERY tricky to control car but fun having computer opposition. Other games Malestrom, ... Beautiful stuff.
Try do some sound stuff but ... ? puzzled. Sound modules all seem okay and happy and working. No sound though. Too quiet :( Fionn phones! Augh! Run up to bed. Unghk.
Computer dial up with windows. Find intel place driverguide.com register download modem driver for linux ... hopefully. Download stuff for sound. Download nVidia docs though says yast2/you whould be able to do it by itself. (once the modem works in linux!)

In afternoon we go visit Aedin. house lots of work done - stairs moved completely kids sleep in car Paul puts on coffee mostly. Kids in - they wake. Lots of snacks. Chipsticks Kate likes. Tortillas & salsa. Chocolate & custard-cream biscuits. Coffee and apple juice.
HOME we go. Via a toymaster. Fionn picks up magasine. Motorway traffic is heavy & slow. Kate needs the loo! Pull off motorway and then off to quiet place. Home... and we have dinner! Fionn makes sandwich for quick adult hunger satiation. I put on fast pasta (small penne) and fish fingers for kids. chomp chomp
Daire violin practice.
Bed. Kids pyjamaed, teeth, 2 books Kate, then 4 pages of Wind in the Willows

food. We have Fionn's warmed mushroom pie (with mashed potatoes without mushrooms for kids. Kaye & I also have sweetcorn + cheese. Daire complains about a mushroom and writes up a formal complaint. Fionn answers the complaint.
We make coffee after dinner. Read newspaper. Daire visiting Conor. Fionn tidies loads of stuff upstairs. Kate & I go shopping to superquinn. Kate falls asleep. Bottles into recycling bank. Then. Hmmm. Get Kate out. She wakes a bit and really likes the idea of a particular baby trolley. She fits and strapped in. Sleepy but wakes up after we get bread. She munches on bread - slice after slice through the shopping. Maybe 6 small slices in total. Veg/Fruit section she gets out of baby seat into seat for her size. Yoghurts + milk. General stuff. All collected then checkout. Pile stuff on conveyor. Kate wants to help but trolley too full. She helps push the trolley. While I help pack bags Kate is out of trolley. Lift her up to sign receipt.
We call to butcher. Get sausages, chicken, mince, burgers. Kate gets black jack lollipop. Yummmmm. home unpack shopping
I cook dinner. Yummy carrot + turnip + onion + garlic + spring onion veg in oil/butter - mixed spice, curry powder, pepper, sweet chilli sauce. Potatoes - I mash some for kids which turns out to be enough bar 1 for everyone. And sausages. BEans? I think. Not sure. what hmm. I forget stuff.
Camp night on RTE - together with other tv stuff.

I gave Fionnuala and the kids a lecture on the differences,
science, history and etymology of Theobromine and
Caffeine last night. They told me to shut up pretty quickly! :(
Chocolate comes from the cacao tree (Theobroma cacao).
Coffee from coffee beans (Coffea arabica, other Coffea trees).
I was confused over that.
Chocolate contains Theobromine but not caffeine
(unless caffeine is added on purpose to bars).
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chocolate
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Theobromine
I love wiki!
http://www.xocoatl.org/caffeine.htm
Theobromine and Caffeine are confused as chemically they are very similar.
They both have neurochemical effects on people and animals but the effects
are quite different.
Theobromine is metabolised more slowly, the effects have a slow onset
and lasts longer.
The effects of theobrimone is described as gentle, smooth, sensual stimulation
as opposed to nervous stimulation of caffeine.
Dogs and horses metabolise theobromine VERY slowly
so if they eat chocolate it can stay in their system a long time and
if they eat lots of chocolate it can overload their poor livers.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coffea
Theobroma means "divine food" in Greek
are bromine and bromide the chemical substance related (etymologically) to food?
I don't think so.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bromide
Bromine (from Gr. Bromos, meaning "stench")
The word coffee enters English by way of the French cafe, Italian caffe, Dutch koffie,
German Kaffee and Turkish Kahveh which all in turn derive from the Arabic word qahwa.
http://groups.msn.com/foodiesCorner/coffeeorigins.msnw
Also khw. Central Semitic, to be(come) weak, dim, dull, dark. caf-Ai, cafeteria, caffeine,
coffee, ultimately from Arabic qahwa, coffee, wine (originally perhaps "dark stuff"),
akin to Arabic kahiya, to be(come) weak,
Aramaic kh, qh, Hebrew khb, qhb, to be(come) dim, faint, dull.

and if so ... why? isn't bromine a bit bad for you?
and are not bromides bad for you too?

what is the etymology of Theodolite?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Theodolite
and caffeine? where does the name caffeine come from?
you could do a week of word a day in theos related words

Call over to Sheila and Orla. With Daire & Kate and Fionnuala this time Kids have biscuits and fun. They called last night and virus is back. I guessed it would as we left all the security holes wide open.
AntiVir is the bestest and brilliantest. Asked a few people in work and this is THE one thay all recommend. It IS good. Finds AND cleans viruses on disk - all clamav and norton found. And when can't rm virus in memory removes it on reboot. Not aure if I have set it to auto update properly. But I think maybe I have. Experiment gently with both norton and antivir installed ... but disable norton.
Then find how to download a bunch of windows updates in one go. Orla does her doc on pc while that downloads. Kids & Fionn home. Updates applied so holes should be mostly gone. After a teeny bit windows update now says to install service pack 2. Augh! :-( Right. Enough for tonight. Will look up what is in sp2 on the web.
anti-virus fun Call over to Sheila and Orla. I discover what windows XP looks like! Wow! It's been soooo long! :) Orla shows ne Norton Antivirus. Of which I have heard bad things. It is continually popping up virus alarm box if left enabled. We do a full exhaustive and boring scan. Can't tell it to look right there at the file it found !?!? So it finds the virus it finds all the time eventually and can't delete it. Probably in memory. Hmm.
Right.
We find on fsecure site info on virus/trojan.
How it works. What it does. And a neato tool to delete it.
Opasoft/Opaserv
Clever fsecure thing.
f-secure.com/virus-info/
Small fast download.
Unzip. Run - it kills the virus in memory, removes the file,
fixes stuff on hard disk and in registy. And scans whole system
fast.
After reboot (umpteenth) ... after a while Norton re-enables itself.
Nothing for a couple of minutes, then, every minute or so:
Right.
Seems like something else is active.
And norton detects when it writes itself AND removes new file.
But doesn't take care of virus in memory that is replicating itself.
I brought some to try on the digital camera.
After all that. Check windows update. It's never been applied. There are BUCKETS of updates to apply. Eugh. Right. I disable most and set an early critical one to download to see how long it might take. It is faster than expected (said 800k but must not have been). BUT now ones I disabled are not in the list!? AUGH GAH!
time to go home
kathryn is a hunter/cave girl in reindeer-skin and calf-skin with cat skull accessories I'm man in fancy shirt with daire's blue & green cape.
kathryn atheisim for kids I think it might be more fun for kids if they do believe in magic and faries and santa claus and gods for a while when they are small.
ohhh magic isn't bad for them. btw ... Daire can levitate! :) no he can! really! ... for a second or so. is great daire: "oh yeah? Well my Mom does yoga." conor: "oh yeah? Well my mom _teaches_ yoga." daire: "oh yeah? Well I can levitate." .... http://www.cvi.ie/calendar/moncal.htm
Daire & I go with Fionn to ultrasound in Holles St. Drive in goes zippily via new road - Goat - through Donnybrook, left at RDS. Park. Wait for people at desk a bit. Then ultrasound. Ooooh new machine. Big keyboard laid out lots of extra buttons. See lots of baby. As well as measuring parts also have something to flash red and blue on pulses of heart. Software ? Done on time/movement? Back out we go. Then hmmm hungry! Desire food. We drive .... stop at schoolhouse. Mmm yum. Daire has burger. Humongous burger - we eat salad in it. And fries. I have caesar chicken salad. Fionn has fish. Back to work.

1. The Way The Way that can be experienced is not true; The world that can be constructed is not true. The Way manifests all that happens and may happen; The world represents all that exists and may exist. To experience without intention is to sense the world; To experience with intention is to anticipate the world. These two experiences are indistinguishable; Their construction differs but their effect is the same. Beyond the gate of experience flows the Way, Which is ever greater and more subtle than the world. 3. Without Action Not praising the worthy prevents contention, Not esteeming the valuable prevents theft, Not displaying the beautiful prevents desire. In this manner the sage governs people: Emptying their minds, Filling their bellies, Weakening their ambitions, And strengthening their bones. If people lack knowledge and desire Then they can not act; If no action is taken Harmony remains. 11. Tools Thirty spokes meet at a nave; Because of the hole we may use the wheel. Clay is moulded into a vessel; Because of the hollow we may use the cup. Walls are built around a hearth; Because of the doors we may use the house. Thus tools come from what exists, But use from what does not. 13. Self Both praise and blame cause concern, For they bring people hope and fear. The object of hope and fear is the self - For, without self, to whom may fortune and disaster occur? Therefore, Who distinguishes himself from the world may be given the world, But who regards himself as the world may accept the world. 66. Lead by Following The river carves out the valley by flowing beneath it. Thereby the river is the master of the valley. In order to master people One must speak as their servant; In order to lead people One must follow them. So when the sage rises above the people, They do not feel oppressed; And when the sage stands before the people, They do not feel hindered. So the popularity of the sage does not fail, He does not contend, and no one contends against him. 67. Unimportance All the world says, "I am important; I am separate from all the world. I am important because I am separate, Were I the same, I could never be important." Yet here are three treasures That I cherish and commend to you: The first is compassion, By which one finds courage. The second is restraint, By which one finds strength. And the third is unimportance, By which one finds influence. Those who are fearless, but without compassion, Powerful, but without restraint, Or influential, yet important, Cannot endure.SoftwareManagementManifesto interesting http://www.confucius.org/english/ed0101.htm :)

Fionn goes to Kate's creche parent meeting. Daire down from computer (Kobo Deluxe). Kate wakes up. She's wet the couch. It's bedtime but both kids eat a plate of pasta. Then up and pyjamas. Finish Daire's book - Roald Dahl - The Giraffe and the Pelly and me. Daire reads Tintin from library then. Get Kate ready. She runs around a bit. Read her old macdonald tractor stuck in mud animals pull it out. ANd where do babies come from. I say just 5 pages. Show her where we will finish. When we get to finish she objects. Okay. One more page. We read that .... then she objects. Slightly less strenuously. I computer. kolf and konquest and kobo deluxe and ksir-tetris or something. Fionn home. talk, tv, bed.
I fix food for myself - sweetcorn. Mmmm. Kate comes down! Watches motorbike racing. Up we go. Kate is cross. When I get to bed Kate still complaining for a while.
Collect Daire & David from school/violin. We wait a while outside then egg David to collect his stuff. Daire's left his violin book. Then all way through school to get coats. Meet Miss Ni Chathalain(sp?). Bring them home. Grab lunch for self. Back to work.
Evening leave 17:30. Augh. Traffic all way up Heather road. Slow slow slow. Right. Slow slow slow slow slow. Swap lanes. Vrm slow slow slow. Right hand lane slow slow slow slow leave cars in slow slow. Roundabout Vrmmm vermm meet Kate & Fionn. Also see Bob and ?Oisin?Connor? I cycle home. Pass Bob & kid and stop talk to Fionn and Kate. Kate cries lots when I cycle away leaving them stuck in slow q. Once they get to roundabout there is no traffic in their way rest of the way home.
me very silly up late tv and reading bed late
Fionn home early yay David and Daire out to play. I stand watching. They loiter not going into Conor's house while I am there. As soon as I go they're in. I head across and haul them out. Daire cross but as soon as I go away they play football in Conor's front garden. Conor goes swimming. Daire & David play on green. David getting covered in muck. Lucky Fionn got him pair of Daire's pants instead of school uniform. Afternoon is flying. Fionn doing house plans editing. Wrote letter planning permission object apartments. I call doctor get appointment for vasectomy.
Off to Croke park. I drive Dad's car. Toll bridge. We bring Conor and Daire. Mum minds Kate at home. Ireland hammer Oz compromise rules seem to allow rugby tackles without ball. Daire & Conor like the fact that their team are definately winning. Feed them kit-kats 1st quarter break. We all goto get food in middle. Huge qs. No chips. Get to front when hot food over for 10 mins. Send the rest back to seats. I head along. Q a while. See a full round of burgers go from frozen to cooked. Get some of last box. Kids eat them. Fin. Drive home. Grand. Fionn back finished.
food.
I manage to generate xml freemind can load in PI tool's python. Yaay. First more than 1/2 line python change for me. combining PI and freemind FreeMind makes looking at AND adding notes to the phylogenetic trees easy peasy and user firendly.
I get breakfast and make rye bread lunch for myself. It's chilly light rain wet underfoot on bike to work. ears cold.
start work freemind to jim get distracted hey freemind would be great viewer for PI phylogenetic trees hack up dot to xml in perl thing lovely ... but now more info in tree would be great ALSO jeez configure of Qt had finished (started yesterday) kicked off a "make" AND 3 HOURS later it's STILL building !!!! ???? !!!!
Loads for work on FileQueue FINALLY making progress (i.e. visible progress) (progress yesterday involved working out lots of bugs and practically no new tests). queue open doesn't realise things are removed if IT removes them when it has them locked (likely me not checking return codes correctly in 100% of cases). Big batch of tests on the module all working now just 1 thing to iron out. Mailed spec to Stella too.
Home. Late I get home :( Shopping has arrived. Fionn out to work to do her project management course homework: work breakdown diagram and plan for homeless. Kids to bed. Kate insists on going into our bed. Right I read her stories there but don't stay till she is asleep. Terminator! :) news gah silly tv MMmmmmm brack. chomp chomp before bed
work work work get lots of my FileQueue.pm code done start running tests but get stuck silly things returning undef or untrue values from Queue::Dir Storable stuff If only 1 thing in Q next alwqays returns it? If more than that next goes through and at end returns undef ... and resets Q (also refreshing from disk) Anyway lots of work writing tests and getting them to be good. Loads of code ... reasonably okay but returns need a tidy. Taking longer than expected.
Fionn calls 18:29ish. Car ran out of petrol in road. :-E eek Silly nasty person drove right up behind her. Car started and she abandoned it in Bewlies. She jsut had Kate with her. Derval collected kids. I intend leaving right then but hack at FileQueue.pm and t/filequeue.t a bit waugh! Nearly 19:00 so rush home.
Fionn has pasta and peas and frankfurters made for kids & I. I put child seat on bike, collect front bike light, top spout of petrol can. Have food. Cycle cycle Maxol Sandyford. 4 euros for 4 liters. Cycle cycle cycle via Ind Est to Bewlies. Avoid steep Sandyford hill or dark narrow road after that. Might have been shorted but. Pass Winston. Into hotel carpark. Yep find car. Park bike. Petrol into car. Car seats fold down, parcel shelf off, bike into car. Me into car. Home. Lisa's friends at door of house talking. I extract bike and all from car.
In home TV is being shunned. Daire & Fionn are doing yoga. I eat more food (Kate's lunch - rye bread was not a hit with the kids!). Fionn brings kids up to bed, well, I start shifting them. Get teeth brushed. Read story to Daire - Kate objects but hasn't got her book yet. Fionn calms her - they get books. Daire & I finish James and the Giant Peach. Then Kate into bed. Irish legends Fionn and the Dragon. Puss in boots. Kate cross doesn't want light off or to stay in bed. I just say night and leave.
Computer on - Fionn wants to do project mgmt course homework plan for homeless developed from strategy document. Kate cries but not screaming. I go into Kate after while but that makes her worse ... but whew not too bad. She quietens down gradually. Fionn at puter, myself downstairs. Home. Fionn up in bed. Kids with her. Daire doing homework. Horseplay with Kate. Lift her up into air by thighs. Then go down. Kate takes cold rice. Heat up rice and chicken Korma. Put on pasta too. Kids rice first then pasta with chopsticks. Finish the apple juice. Fionn down dinner about over.
tea tv piano then kids to bed Daire gets into pyjamas grand. Kate we follow her and eventually manage to get teeth brushed and pyjama top + nappy on. New pyjamas. She leaves bottoms off. Then read story for Daire - James with giant peach arrive in new york and descend ... Kate objects. Then Read two stories from two little celtic legends books for Kate. Oisin and Cu-Cullain. She is not happy to leave it at that. Kicks off sheets. Goes over to Daire to get stories read to her. A bit of tv, kitchen clean, Ruth phones, Sheila and Orla phone computer is frozen. Kate in Daire's bed wanting story. Daire is trying to sleep. So I get her in her own bed but she's really cross. I explode after a bit and into our room on her own she goes. I hang up all the clothes and do stuff and she's quieter I leave her out and we're both very contrite and she goes into her bed and is asleep very quickly. *sigh* I'm wreckedish. Stew comedy quite like other Fionn wouldn't like either I think.

news, women and murder more likely vs men as they're stronger and legal system bias
nicaragua men against violence and ...
Fionn & I think and debate.
I feel humans are so complex and societies also complex that
peace is no natural state. Society history and evolution can lead to both.
I do not know over long term given either good or tight
situations is violence or peace more likely to evolve. Peace yes - ish - it
certainly will allow society to develop technology if they have time for
luxury but they could easily be opressing a big part of their society at the same time.
Slavery or poverty/suppression.
Is violence more natural as it is difficult to break cycles of violence?
Cow example Fionn puts forward.
If people of more enlightened nature told us to stop oppressing the cows and
give equal rights. We would resent that and if we didn't accept that it
would lead to more churn/situations. But before 100% of cown are suppressed
and are eventually for the chop. If there is revolution there is much
more noticable incidents but possibly some cows can overcome/escape.
Fionn up in night with Kate apparently. I'm oblivious.

bed.
Afternoon we all pack up and head in car to Dun Laoghaire. Walk up path Daire hurling. Watch windsurfers. Daire & I beside beach and come to end have to clamber up tall wall. Kate out of buggy and walks too. Likes touching rocks.
16:30 head off to Dun Laoghaire. Driving first glance of water WHOOOO! 3/4 more sails out busy water with waves rolling in and breaking everywhere. I rig up beside someone derigging. Everything together fast, most downhaul I ever manage I think somehow. Wetsuit on. Out I go. I launch by rocks and it's a bit deep and I end up swimming for ages. Less wind just there and deep/waves so waterstart hard. Avoid rocks and get going. Oh wind is more east than I thought. I thought more north-east. Sail zoom out 45 degrees over waves towards ringsend. Sailing back in towards beach with waves, wind & waves push in more. Brilliant fun. Hey! Less people out. One other guy with green sail out - can gybe sometimes. Starting (half dry more waterstart as generally deeper than expected and waves keep changing the depth) on inside (i.e. near beach) is actually harder than outside. On inside there is less wind a bit in shadow. Outside some waves get woah stomach dropping big! Yeek! Adrenalin. But I avoid crashing in breaking zones. Good few waterstarts outside (after trying to tack) I'm happy as can do more easily. Still work but fun :) Try gybes on inside mostly a couple half or more before falling. Tricksy. Green person in. I land close to wall down beach a bit. No wind at all. Try get going but very tricky. Finally swim board and sail the short bit back to the beach. Pack up now it's dark. Home.
Fionn has kept food for me. I munch. Kids bed by Fionn I think. TV. Bed later. Can't find car keys? So windsurf gear left on/in car.

In general I dislike petitions but have found one worthy.
Some petitions miss the point I think but reading up on this I agree with everything
(I'm very fussy).
Not in agreement itself with the desecration or interfering with the
lines of energy *ahem* of the Hill of Tara but with the focus of the
government and it's agencies on roads to the detriment of
more sustainable AND more practical transport.
Also with the way the government and it's agencies
( I need a tla - tgaias ?) operate.
Of course I, being of the people, am also the government so shut up and stop
complaining now and do something about it!

The government and agencies need to operate in an ethical manner.
We can not trust them and I am very uneasy with the responsibility held.

Extremely annoying release. bug446 comes in and investigate really fast 3 cosmetic changes ... but we've to do them and release? ambiguity arises in one so requires delving into do the delving in ... fix stuff, test stuff phone home will be late then do release release takes while to get all docs right then after packed up and tagged find ARGH! missed two files so repack it up
Once get up have breakfast. We've loads of leftover lovely food to munch on after dinner party. Fionn has done clearing work in garden. Picked up arch wind blew over with loganberries and sweetpeas and camellia attached. Chopped stuff. Also is clearing out small room we're going to paint, tidying kids toys and also clearing out the attic a bit. (typing this in a alittle voice is shouting inside my head "NESTING INSTINCT" but I'm ignoring it) I at least am of some use and paint the little room. Start with the awkward bits. Goes slowly. Kids rough and tumbling with big sofa double fold matress on top of our bed. Food 16:30. YUM. Chicken korma and rice and tiramisu after. Painting better after that. Don't quite have enough in two half pots to finish. Fionn and Kate take buggy and go to shop to get newspaper. It rains while they're gone and I'm still painting. They arrive back happy and bouncy though.
I reheat stuff for my tea and snack on delicasies in fridge. Heat tomato soup and bread & butter for Daire. Kiwi for Kate, she spoons out contents herself. Then kiwi and orange for Daire. Kate falls asleep on couch on me. Fionn gets her bed stuff and we put it on her and carry her up to her bed. - well - up to her mattress beside Fionn's bed with sheep skin over her Daire up with me - pyjamas, teeth, book he reads himself in bed. Freeciv ! Augh. Play and fix script.
Then Fionn up, puter off, I bring up clothes and hang out to dry, grab food for my tummy. While munching hear Kate crying. I go up and she's beside Fionn on her mattress but cross and crying. Can't settle her in place. I bundle her up in blanket. She says her nose is sore (she's getting over cold she's had last two days). We get her cream. Downstairs we go. I hold Kate in bundle and finish my food off with tiramisu (last of) and wine. Kate watches people on tv. Then up we go. Light on lying down under bed. Kate is happy doesn't sleep but makes reasonably happy noises. I read a bit ... dropping off ... dropping ... Turn out light sleep. ..... Kate cries a bit - light on. Later on again 3:30 Kate cries a bit more ... settles down again. urg.
We plan to get out of house. Get diy/stuff Woodies/Atlantic/Somewhere. Do diy and house/garden tidying. Escape check mirror in Dun Laoghaire and pump tyres, fix trailer plastic covers. BUT tidying and reading newspaper and other activities impinge.
We leave for Dun Laoghaire 16:00. Kate & Daire & I get parking ticket as the security van is there. Then in car and Fionn lies across seats for a rest. Gates of coal harbour are shut. Lift Daire onto wall beside gate and he jumps down. Then pass him tyre and bag of tools/materials. Then lift Kate up onto wall. Then up myself and down other side and lift Kate. Kate has red wellies on. She likes stomping in puddles. Two other lads on a yacht taking down it's mast. We go to boat, spill out water and pump up wheels. Can't with kids and time do much about trailer pads. It showers twice. Take cover under nearby currach. I join kids last shower until it's gone. Sitting on mast in middle. Daire in front. Kate behind. Looks like fun. We go out by slip-way. Daire first out onto rocks then down and under railing. Kate the same. I help her but she goes under railing and climbs up herself. Then me I go around railing with gear.
Back to car and Fionn. We pile in and drive over to windsurf area. Couple of windsurfers packing up. Kids and I head for pier thing. Water at perfect height for it. Pause on beach attaching hooks to rod. I help Daire cast a few times, then he does it himself and is soon very good. Kate sticks close hanging on to us. She gets a couple of gos. Then the line is sticking when cast out. A loop is unravelled and catching line. We do a cast and pull it until we see all tangle. It's not twisted too badly but trying to untangle very difficult. Kate doesn't like this messing and heads back to car. Daire minds her. Break line and tie it just one knot instead of tangle. Daire back. But then the knot is catching the line. I leg it back to car and get bag for penknife. Casting better again then.

=head1 COMMENT
It appears that accessing the hash through the reference
e.g. $ref->{357135710}->{137}->{"09"}; is okay
But dereferencing and copying the hash is either
j. done incorrectly
(something is wrong with the syntax here?)
(perldoc perlref says:
It isn't possible to create a true reference to an IO handle (file-
handle or dirhandle) using the backslash operator. The most you
can get is a reference to a typeglob, which is actually a complete
symbol table entry. But see the explanation of the *foo{THING}
syntax below. However, you can still use type globs and globrefs
as though they were IO handles. )
on "the beloved" *foo{THING} syntax
(again from perldoc perlref:
As a special case, "\(@foo)" returns a list of references to the
contents of @foo, not a reference to @foo itself. Likewise for
%foo, except that the key references are to copies (since the keys
are just strings rather than full-fledged scalars). )
but *foo{THING} :
o. doesn't work, is old and deprecated ? in practice but not in docs?
and
p. waider doesn't belove *foo{THING}
or
k. is correct but bug in perl
I'm inclined to believe j. but can't find out how to properly
dereference deep hashes or complex structures?
Further interesting behaviour can be seen with different dereferencing.
E.g. returning reference from hash like this in subroutine and then
dereferencing =>
a blank hash is introduced into the hash???
Dumper $ref: $VAR1 = {
'357135710' => {
'137' => {
'09' => 'flat'
},
'HASH(0x810283c)' => {}
}
};

Reporting bugs I mention there could have been more info in a bug. And the idea grows till I collect thoughts on what I would like to see in this bug and bugs in general.

TODO: prep bug report thing for web, another tTODO here somewhere here about it Thursday and Friday here is main content:
http://bugzilla.dub.ie.alphyra.com/show_bug.cgi?id=407
Just to note detail that should be added in general to help define the bug exactly.
Quick summary of requirements: (it would be nice to map every bug to
an exact requirement ... requirement definition and tracking is
a whole other days work though)
The earliest activation or transaction on the card determines
partnership of the card.
Cards are listed partner first then non-partner.
Partner totals and non-partner totals are shown as well as overall totals
Only topup or redeem transactions are shown (not balance or activate).
Topup and redeem transactions are correlated together and shown one
row for redeem then one row for topup.
A note on implementation:
Partnership determination in code was a later added requirement and
the code/sql involved is awkward. We should monitor this for performance
as well as correctness. A refactoring of both database and code could be
done depending on performance requirements and effort.
Maybe 1-5 here could be used as a checklist ... we could maybe review and refine
them as I've just quickly drawn them up here for this specific case.
Are there general or generic bug reporting guidelines or checklists out there?
Collect them, use them, refine them and make a good list.
1. As well as version of multi_mops the specific machine
e.g. probably mops-test in this case.
2. Particular part of system within which problem is was mentioned:
Overall Monthly transaction Summary Report.
3. Along with detail on the problem (in this case details on the report):
The non-partner transactions are being listed in the champion sports activation
section.
The card numbers are listed and the transaction value is shown for redeem
transactions - no other figures are listed.
Tested for April, May, June, July..
4. Further exact detail would greatly help.
Exact card numbers and what IS reported and what is required to be reported
should be pasted into the bug report.
e.g.
http://mops.dub.ie.alphyra.com//reports/giftcard/Champion%20Sports_18082004.html
specifically in this report card number 9372261000004373 appears in both partner and non-partner

5. Detail on the data being worked on.
How the test was set up.
Where the data came from.
e.g. In this case:
What type and value of card,
when the card was activated and terminal details.
What transactions were performed with card.
Resulting logs and data in database if they would appear to be useful.
In this case some info from database would be quite useful.

Bug report tips and more on software QA and testing
2 related "fundamental philoMOsophical" thoughts:
Bug reporting is communication between reporter and development.
Much thought have gone into best practices for this activity
and much of this is available on the web. Many software products on web
add to general best practices and have their own tailored
bug reporting guidelines.
Requirements are communication between everyone working on product
from customers, through to managers, QA, development.
Requirements, if they are well defined, then tracked and managed help
with the whole software process. In fact "help" is too weak a word.
They can be the foundations on which the whole product is built.
In particular when reporting a bug if the bug can be mapped to
a requirement then the description of the problem is made much
easier as the requirement contains the description of the
correct behaviour.
Where a bug cannot be mapped to a specific requirement this shows
a gap in the requirements of a system. New requirements should
be drawn up to fill that gap.
Where a bug is mapped to a requirement the requirement may be reviewed
to ensure it is a good* requirement. Bugs in a requirements area are
an indication of a misinterpretation of the requirement.
Requirements may be continually refined with feedback from tracking
defects and finding defects root cause.
Good requirements are:
Necessary - no redundant requirements, but yet important to have "complete"
requirements. user requirements and system requirements
Atomic - one idea in a requirement
Clear - not open to (mis)interpretation, understandable
Traceable - split requirements into groups e.g. by feature, by component of system
- and number them
Verifiable - Inspection, Demonstration, Analysis, Test
Attainable - Achievable, feasible
Extra interesting links and reading but less relevant as they go on ...
*good requirements
http://www.google.ie/search?q=cache:EQmZ0l92LboJ:www.catalyst.uq.edu.au/designsurfer/good_requirements.PDF+good+requirements&hl=en
It turns out that good requirements have the following essential qualities:
1. A good requirement contains one idea. If a requirement is found to contain more than one idea then it should be
broken into two or more new requirements.
2. A good requirement is clear; that is, the idea contained within it is not open to interpretation. If any aspects of a
requirement are open to interpretation then the designer should consult the relevant parties and clarify the
statement.
3. Requirements should remain as general as possible. This ensures that the scope of the design is not
unnecessarily limited.
4. A good requirement is easily verifiable, that is, at the end of the design process it is possible to check whether
the requirement has been met.
These criteria apply to both user and systems requirements. Examples are given in the section below.
In addition to the qualities listed above, a set of good requirements should completely describe all aspects relevant to a product's design.
http://engineering.lbl.gov/sy/requirements.htm
# Necessary - No gold plating
# Atomic - Describes one and only 1 function
# Concise - Minimal, Understandable, Non-redundant,
# Traceable
For example, every Project X Observation requirement is linked to a Project X Top-Level Science requirement
- Primary or imposed and derived requirements
- There is a trail to the driving requirement needs
# Verifiable - Inspection, Demonstration, Analysis, Test
# Attainable - Achievable, feasible

I am more liberal and left than nelson mandela and the dali lama !!! ???

Economic Left/Right: -7.00
Social Libertarian/Authoritarian: -6.72
Interesting read on people's polital stance - interesting also to
see how attitudes on gay and women and economics make people I would have
thought liberal less so. I'm half guessing.
Car insurance time and for penalty points discount they want info from driving license. Fionn sends me hers.

I think when I sent Daire down they just woke up. Kate & I were waiting round the car weeding for a bit. Eventually Daire came and then Joey. Apologies for lateness I stupidly said "ahh sure it's grand!" DOH! And I was wanting to strangle someone really. :( Silly me. Then later David with a photo and two bananas. Gate still open in school we were there 9:15ish. Met Aisling's mom and they're going to Australia or thinking of it. Aisling was telling them Daire told her about Australia. Anyway .... that's this morning so far I think. Oh Alphyra car park is very full again. ITSMobile people moved in.
I go get bike. Unlock, Raise saddle. cycle cycle have to stop at roundabout, get into flow beside car not turning off check release - nothing on it, email ebay stuff breakfast I eat just right I brought in months ago (at least think it mone) and sit down then coffee ahhhh
up dress breakfast D dress self, bring Kate's clothes in car at creche Kate's teacher comments how good she was yesterday when they went outside she wasn't upset and went in to help Claire. At roundabout small hesitant micra. Too close to left so I can't go inside. So around outside. Momentum is good. If stop have to wait much longer.
I'm still fixing and testing smsengine filtering in morning. Then full regression testing and find HUGE batch messages have 3 issues:
Fionn's tired. Hullo we say. Kids go get dressed in pyjamas. I help Kate and brush teeth and then read her story - well she chooses a radisson pipi longstocking page that you stick things to. We stick things and "read" it. Then Kate unsettled. Stephen Baxter's Ring for me. Tom Holt's elf book Fionn is reading and then Ian Banks Song of Stone for Kate. After tossing a bit she drops off sound asleep. I go down. Daire & Fionn are watching Duncan thingy house building program on TV. I get Carrot soup Fionn has made yum. With homemade bread too. Daire heads up to bed.
TV. Leave stuff in kitchen mostly in a mess.
I shower. Bed. Wrecked tired.
Bill's got a gig coming up this Wed. loads of smsengine work adding automated tests and implementing stuff including filtering
Initially Kate into teeny tot area me minding. I watch Daire see hime on climbing wall. Climbing up little bit ... then swinging off. I want to see hime go high high ... Fionn gets Kate a red top ... we're not sure what she is allowed to do. In little place while Fionn gets us coffee and breakfast rool and chocolate. We sit on couch relax a bit eat/drink. Then Fionn into big place with Kate. I read newspaper. Later kate through net "HEllo Daddy". I come in and she shows me slide. In big area ball guns being fired (ow!) Kate doesn't get hit even once. She shows me slide and tunnel and climbs high up (with ehm. encouragment) Follow her on ground but them lose track! Run around a bit. Fionn spots her finally. She comes down. More ball play. More other play. Finally out and spend while in tot place. I'm waiting for Fionn. We have fun piling things up and riding on things and lifting/carrying/positioning. Then Fionn finds us and says she was looking for us! Out we go and drive home via Firhouse. Pas real close to Scholarstown park actually Colm & Linda 5 nearish BBQ in Keith's place.
Cork match. Daire watching. Oghhh seems rough both sides really want to play. phone home, talk mum mostly me cross Daire castle D & Kate arguing we make up
I go Windsurf. Tide will be out, strong SW winds. Wind will be offshore in Dun Laoghaire but I'm late - it's 17:30 when I get all gear on car and Cork had won the hurling WOHHOOO! :) Assumpta comes out and congrats me. And text Bill too. Catch forecast on way down. Eek. Force 7 21kts gusting 9 at Dublin airport. Dun Laoghaire car park there's very gentle wind. With occasional heavy gust. So rigging is less risky. Tide surprisingly high for low water. Nice though can sail a bit in shallow water. Out on water wind goes from real strong gust to nothing. I stay close. Up to neck, head out of depth few times. Water start sometimes but uphaul others. In water no wind very hard to hold sail ready for next gust. Great fun. No other surfers out. Flat water but no carve gybe. Get mostly round twice. Wind drops off completely. I'm in and packed up and it's dark 20:00. German student in Ireland just arrives staying Blackrock surf wetsuit water temp chat.
Home and kids in pyjamas up our room. Daire is puss in boots :) He has bike helmet on, a belt, cork flag in belt and Fionn's suede boots. Brilliant! I read Kate the hungry caterpillar as bedtime story. Then she's hyper a little not wanting to sleep. I read some of Baxter's Ring to her (Fionn got it for me from Library). That doesn't settle her but Tell her to serttle/sleep a few times and she drops off. Read a bit more.
Then downstairs. Night to Daire. Fionn brings Daire down and we tell him. Sort out clothes that are drying (went mad 3 washes yesterday).
Fionn plays piano. I get windsurf gear in from car. Really howling gale now. Rain too. Turn on bright back garden spotlight. Really pretty. I play piano then stupid veg tv long time till bed late.
Fionn & I go to Atlantic Homecare buy pots (for potted herb+strawberry presents for people) and bi
