Not the worst day

Back in departures again.

The "hotel" last night was pretty basic, but close to the train station, so close in fact that I think the train went through my room. The room was fitted with some unique security features.
I am now awaiting an earlier flight than origanally booked which should get me home at quite a resonable hour. So all I'm all I have had worse days.

Departures

Just on boarding bus to Dusseldorf and the transfer bus is very very stuffy (read hot and smelly). Left loads of time to get here today as a truck had exploded on the M25. As it turns out traffic was fine so I had plenty of time kicking around departures. It used to be like a wonderland of tax free electronic goodness, but now it looks like the same ole same ole. As I am flying the new food free BA I got 15 quid worth of vouchers which are on a use em or lose em basis. As a result, 3 slices of carrot cake later and low GI boy has shakes and sugar rush. Talk about a cheap date.
The bus is eventually moving and I am glad they got us out of the airconditioned departures lounge to sit on this stuffy (see above) bus.
Now off to Dusseldorf for surgery with the good Prof. W.
(Not me understand, somebody else auctually gets the operation)

Culinary Breakthrough

Today I had a road to Demascus moment.
Marmite and Hummus combined to make Marmiteyhummus. It tastes oh so good and, like the greatest of discoveries, made by serendipity as one failed to clean the knife between the spreading of marmite and the application of hummus to one's pittia. Mmmmmm. Rember where you heard it first.

Always read the instructions

While dressing the boy this morning I found the following label inside one of his new tops. Needless to say this threw the day into disarray as it compleatly ruled out the activities we had planned in for the afternoon. I mean really whats next? "Always keep the infant or child out of tanks of hungry great white sharks with fricken lasers on their heads"!

Do not microwave.

Its gone live

Well I have announced this blog to all and sundry so I expect all sorts of witty intresting and insightful comments :-)

Dead Bunny Day

Bit of a difficult start to the day, went on my normal morning training run which was going great until I passed a rabbit on the road who had obviously been hit by a car and was not in a good way. I had to go back and finish him off. Its been a long time since I killed an animal, and this was fairly up close and personal, and I found that I dont have quite the same cold streak I used to have. Poor little fella :-(
Bunny incident aside it was a cracking good run, knocking 5 mins off my pace of 2 months ago with no real extra effort.

Just as I was about to leave for work Jules went for a "Burton" and cracked his head good 'n hard off the skirting board. Almost instant lump! When I left the house he had something that looked like half a plum on his forhead. Left a cracking bruise.

Lads weekend!

Jules looks bemused at the prospect of a lads weekend. Lisa is off to see her mate JaneyP this weekend so he and I have the house to ourselves from tomorrow afternoon. We have planned in a marathon session of CBeebies mixed with UKTVHistory and Monster Truck Madness (Jules likes his monster truck action, I kid you not).

Lisa has the fear.

Hopefully all that big wheel'ed truck action will take his mind off the fact that his b**t**d teeth are killing him, poor little fella :-(

That Chicken Recipe..

Ingredients

  • 4 cloves garlic
  • 1/2 Onion
  • 1 chilli
  • teaspoon each of cumin, ginger, mustard and paprika
  • teaspoon of corriander leaf (we use the Barts Spices stuff in oil)
  • chicken breasts, skinless. We go for organic free range here
  • 150-200ml Low fat natural yogurt
  • Spicey beans:
    • green beans
    • wholenut peanut butter
    • peanuts (1/4 pack)
    • Tabasco sauce (good splash)
    • Honey if you are not watching the GI
    • Tiny drop of cooking oil
  • Brown basmatic rice
    • tea spoon of tumeric
How To:
Chop and crush garlic, chilli (no seeds for us) and onion, mix with ginger, coriander, cumin, paprika, mustard and yogurt. Add chicken and allow to marinade (overnight if possible)
Before any of the other cooking starts put the brown basmatic rice on to boil as this takes longest to cook.
Pre-heat the grill, and while thats on the go blanch the green beans real quick. Now but the chicken under to grill and chargrill both sides (about 4 mins a side). While chicken is grilling drain beans and oil, peanuts and peanut butter to the pot and fry them off hard, a little char here is a good thing. Remove from heat and add in tabasco (and honey if you are having it).
With the rice, when most of the water has boiled off add the remainder of marinade and allow to finish cooking. At the end add some yogurt and tumeric to rice. Stir and serve up with chicken on top and beans on the side. Nice.
Big props to AWT for chicken marinade, from his low GI cookbook.

Lets get a couple of posts up here:

The big news yesterday was I decided it was time to harvest my BUMPER apple crop for this year. As you can see not amazingly fruitful but the tree has been neglected for a few years, so the fruiting was a bit hit and miss. Also it got the dreaded Apple Scab , so I'll have to do a big clean up at the end of autumn coupled with a bit of harsh pruning (maybe get me Ma on the case).

In other news, we put together a cracking dinner last night. Chargrilled chicken in a yoghurt and spicy onion maraninade with some brown basmatic rice (with yoghurt and tumeric), served up with with spicy hot green beans with peanut. Cracking (and low GI to boot). I'll put up the recipe in the next post.
